A good jockstrap does two jobs: it supports you when you move, and it stays comfortable when you don't. Whether you want one for the gym, for sport or for everyday wear, four things decide how it feels: the waistband, the pouch, the fabric and the size. This guide walks through each one.
What is a jockstrap?
A jockstrap (also called an athletic supporter) is underwear with a front pouch, a waistband and two elastic straps at the back instead of a full seat. The open back keeps you cool, and the straps hold the pouch in place when you run, lift or jump. Today many men wear jockstraps as everyday underwear too, simply because they like the fit.
1. Waistband: wider means more stable
The waistband does most of the holding. A wide waistband, around 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inches), spreads the pressure, stays flat and is less likely to roll down during exercise. Narrower bands feel lighter and sit lower, which many men prefer for everyday or going-out wear.
- For training and sport: choose a wide, firm band, like our Classic Jockstrap.
- For everyday comfort: a medium band with a soft finish is enough.
2. Pouch: support versus freedom
The pouch should hold everything in place without squeezing. Look for a contoured or 3D-shaped pouch, which gives room and support at the same time. Knit and mesh pouches let air through, which matters most when you sweat.
3. Fabric: mesh, cotton or silky blends
- Mesh: the most breathable option. Small eyelets let heat escape, so mesh is ideal for the gym and warm weather. See our mesh athletic jockstrap.
- Cotton: soft and familiar, good for everyday wear, but it holds moisture longer during hard workouts.
- Silky nylon or modal blends: smooth, stretchy and quick-drying, with a sleek look under clothes.
4. Getting the size right
Jockstraps are sized by waist, not by pouch. Measure around your waist where the band will sit, then compare with the size chart on the product page.
- Between two sizes? Size up. A band that is too tight digs in; one that is slightly loose still holds well because the straps do part of the work.
- The straps should sit under the curve of your glutes without cutting in or sliding up.
- The pouch should feel secure when you squat or jump, without pressure.
How to care for your jockstrap
Wash at 30°C (cold to warm) with similar colours, skip the bleach and the dryer. Heat is what wears out elastic fastest, so air-drying keeps the waistband firm for longer.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wear a jockstrap every day?
Yes. Many men wear jockstraps as regular underwear. Choose a breathable fabric and a band that doesn't dig in, and it's as comfortable as briefs.
Should a jockstrap be tight?
Snug, not tight. The pouch should hold you in place, and the waistband should stay put without leaving deep marks.
What's the difference between a jockstrap and a thong?
A thong has a single strip of fabric at the back. A jockstrap has two straps and an open back, which gives more support for sport. Read our guide to men's thongs to compare.
How many jockstraps do I need?
If you train three or more times a week, three to five pairs lets you rotate them so the elastic recovers between wears.
